11 Ways towards Environmental Conservation

Nowadays, we can no longer hide the truth or sugarcoat the dreadful condition of our planet earth. At this time all we can do is to make collaborative efforts towards environmental protection. Gasification or Incineration: Which is better for the environment?

Sustainable Energy for the Future

In today’s world almost everyone are very accustom to a ready access of electricity. However, the most abundant and low-cost energy source which is the fossil fuel creates huge impact to the environment. Among all the form of energy sources it’s the highest emitter of carbon dioxide (CO2), a greenhouse gas.

According to IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) report the atmospheric mixing ratio of CO2 has increased worldwide by about 100 ppm (36%) over the last 250 years. Just imagine if CO2 in the atmosphere continue to increase on the coming years, then maybe it would be too late for us to stop global warming. And with this problem at hand, we cannot continuously depend on fossil fuels for most of our energy consumption. We need sustainable and clean green energy and it should be given utmost attention nowadays or else our future is at risk.

There are various solutions available, there’s the use of renewable energy, biofuels, and other researches on science such as capturing of energy from yeast and genetically engineered bacteria. There’s probably one winning solution but the most interesting solution is the use of wastes to generate electricity. Through this technology, both problems on energy and wastes can be solved. We even don’t need to use our natural resources since it uses wastes to derive clean energy. This is known as the biosphere process or biosphere technology.

Improve Energy Efficiency and Sustainability

It is quite evident that nations have not given much attention to the importance of energy conservation and efficiency from the past years. While world’s energy consumption has continued to increase over the years, the policies on energy efficiency and sustainability are often ineffectual and not properly implemented. And since energy is required for economic growth, it is just essential to have sustainable clean energy and improved energy efficiency. 

Energy efficiency is defined by World Energy Council (WEC) as the overall changes due to reduction of energy usage for a given service or level of activity. But it does not necessarily mean that it is only because of technical changes, it can also be the result of a better organization and management or improved economic efficiency in the sector. 

But really, how can we achieve improved energy efficiency?

By lowering or decreasing our energy consumption through effective energy policies and efficient technologies we can improve our energy efficiency. Since for every product/service produced there is an equivalent energy usage, the less energy consumed the higher the energy efficiency. Therefore, improved energy efficiency will result in improvement of production, total costs reduction and eventually—improvement of our economy.
On the other hand having improved energy efficiency is not enough for almost 7 billion people around the world. Energy problem couldn’t be resolve without both energy efficiency and sufficiency. Although it is possible for every nation to conserve energy, if the resources can’t support our present energy needs and of the future generation, then we can say sustainability is way too far achievable. As the term itself defines, sustainability is the ability to meet long term sustenance whether it is for individual needs or for a global scale. It is meeting the needs within the carrying capacity of supporting ecosystems without risking the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. 

There are options given such as the explorations on solar, wind, hydro and geothermal energy. Sounds promising but still are not the best sources for the sustainable energy we want for our future. Aside from being capital intensive there is still the underlying question of environmental impact and seasonal factors. These renewable sources do not totally eliminate the burning of fossil fuels though known as clean energy. The only known renewable sources that generally meet this are biomass and burning of wastes such as biosphere technology.

Developing our renewable energy sources

Many oil importer countries including the Philippines have finally shift their focus to the development of their renewable energy sources. The Philippine government has laid down regulatory and policy framework for the utilization of these renewable sources of energy. Exploration on wind, hydropower, geothermal, biomass, solar and ocean energy is being considered. Sen. Loren Legarda, who is also the founder of Luntiang Pilipinas (Greening of the Philippines) Foundation, and other government officials are pushing the use of renewable sources to further protect the Philippine environment. And aside from the programs on renewable energy, they are also campaigning on the improvement of energy efficiency and conservation and environmental conservation. Examples are the campaigns for National Efficiency and Conservation Program (NEECP), Philippine Clean Air Act and Philippine Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 (PESWMA). 

While these are all possible solutions, however the perfect solution that takes along all these regulations is the joint venture agreement between local government units and Spectrum Blue Steel Corporation (SBSC) regarding the deployment of the biosphere gasification facility. The Biosphere Process™ or Biosphere Technology is the latest breakthrough on waste management and power generation.

The joint venture agreement was accepted under the local government code of 1991 (R.A. No. 7160) and the PESWMA of 2000 (R.A.
